Grading and Assessments

 Grading:

Grading will be based on a 4-point scale:
4 (distinguished) – Above grade level / oftentimes working on a modified curriculum
3 (proficient) working well at the 4th-grade curriculum  2 (basic) – Progressing towards the 4th-grade level
1 (novice) – needs more time and practice to develop skills.

You will see a 4, 3, 2, or 1 on their graded work. As we go, if there are mistakes, we go over them and work on them again as best we can. The aim is so children develop mastery as they go. I invite you to go over their work with them to check in. It helps to reinforce what we have learned in class, and you can also check in with them and offer further guidance as needed.

Assessments:
Students will receive various assessments throughout the year.  These assessments allow us to make sure our plans and goals for your child are being met and allows us to make changes in their instruction if need be.

Benchmark assessments are given 3 times a year in reading and math. This allows me to see what their strengths and weaknesses are and if more time is needed on a particular skill or if someone is ready to move onto a new skill.

Ways to help out at home
One way you can help your child understand is to go over work that comes home.  Look through it and go over incorrect answers.  Ask them what their reasoning was and have them teach you how to do it.
