Curriculum

 CANVAS:

Canvas is similar to Google Classroom. There will be assignments and links to our curriculum found there. Please check it out as this will be a major component of your child's school year and remote learning days.

Reading
Reading will be taught individually, in small groups, and whole groups. The class will analyze stories and look at story components, writing styles, etc.

In guided reading (small groups) students will focus on reading stories that are at their individualized reading level. I will meet with everyone to work on comprehension, fluency, and developing various strategies for decoding and comprehending unknown text. Various activities will be utilized to build fluency and comprehension. There will be time for the children to read on their own, with a peer, and sometimes with a story on tape. Student reading levels will be measured through observation, informal assessments, Developmental Reading Assessments, and progress monitoring.

During whole-class reading a read-aloud text is often used to model a comprehension strategy and students will interact with the text by sharing questions, predictions, and inferences. A variety of other strategies will be implemented while we look at various genres.

On Fridays, we read a class chapter book, Clementine. This allows children to recall information from days prior and listen to a story that utilizes their imagination to follow along.

Yearly Highlights- Reading and understand grade-level text. Fourth grade is all about reading to learn which is a big swing from learning to read

Writing:
Our writing program is taught through writing workshops, journals, and prompts.  In writing workshop, we will focus on the writing process, writing styles, genres, and different writing strategies.  Journal writing will enable the students to write freely to practice the skills taught through writing lessons, and writing workshops.  Students also have writing prompts in which they demonstrate their writing abilities.  Students will be working with their peers to develop and gain ideas as they write and they will be conferencing with teachers to work on the fundamentals of the writing process.

Spelling and Grammar:
Assessments will be given to see where children stand with their spelling and their grammar skills. From there, children will be placed in ability grouping where we will focus on individualized needs within their ability groupings.

Yearly Highlights - Essay writing, writing for a purpose, proper grammar and spelling.

Math
Our math program is Iready. There are online resources that can be found on Canvas. It is common core aligned and incorporates reading, writing, and higher-order thinking skills into the lessons. It allows students numerous opportunities to learn mathematical skills through a “hands-on” approach. The scientific method is imbedded in the curriculum to assist students in organizing their ideas in problem solving. There will also be a variety of other programs to help children develop mastery skills. We follow the common core standards to drive our learning. Some main standards that children will be learning  are:

  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking
  • Number and operations in base ten
  • Measurement and Data
  • Geometry

Yearly Highlights -
Multiplication, Division, and Fractions

Science and Social Studies:
Science and social studies will be taught through books, experiments, projects, field trips, and much more. Each day, a science or social studies lesson will be presented.

Yearly Highlights:
Science - Earth Structure, Energy, Plant and Animal Adaptations, Waves, Human Impact on Earth

Social Studies - NH history, economics and civics

Technology

We use an interactive whiteboard, computers, and other forms of technology daily. Children do have access to their own Chromebook. This Chromebook is theirs until 8th grade. They have been told to take good care of it and to treat it carefully so that it will last these next 5 years. No stickers are allowed on Chromebooks.

Chromebooks and chargers will STAY at SCHOOL unless a planned remote day or inclement weather is predicted.

The students will be responsible for researching, typing, and using the Internet for various projects. We will view websites as a class and students will have the opportunity to take their knowledge from what we have done together and apply it. The children will be visiting approved websites. Our goal is to encourage safe and educational use of all technologies.
