Behaviors

 Positive Reinforcement:

I believe in acknowledging the positives rather than focusing on the negatives. I do this in a variety of ways. One is that I have them earn money. When children are caught doing something nice, they can receive fake money to put in their piggy bank. They put that money towards purchasing things from the Stanley Store. This helps reinforce money concepts, budgeting, counting coins, and saving. We also can earn tally marks every time we receive a compliment from a teacher outside of the classroom. When we receive 20 compliments, the class will get to pick some type of class reward. It is a way to acknowledge the positives and reinforce their good choices while helping them to internalize positive behaviors.

Logical consequences:
The first few weeks of school we are working on establishing rules and potential consequences should those rules be broken. Students are given warnings however sometimes behaviors can escalate and consequences can follow. Depending on the circumstances children may move to the reflection center, or perhaps miss part of recess. Should that happen, they will reflect on what they did and make a plan on ways they can help that situation in the future. Sometimes children may be asked to just take a break. Take a Break can be a valuable strategy for helping children develop self-control while preserving the smooth flow of the classroom. It is a way to teach children to refocus and return to successful participation in class activities before things escalate. Anytime this happens I meet with the child(ren)to reflect on their choices and how we can make positive ones in the future.
Many times minor infractions are dealt with then and there in the classroom. However, should any unacceptable behaviors or patterns in their behavior arise you will be notified. I also will send updates throughout the year to keep you informed as to how your child is doing. I feel I would want to know how my child is doing, good or bad, and believe all parents deserve that courtesy.
